Micro-turning is a manufacturing process with stock removal for metals and synthetic materials starting from a bar (raw material).
In contrast to milling, it's the workpiece or the semi-finished product which revolves; it performs the main cutting movement by its rotation. The firmly clamped tool is moved along the rotating workpiece by means of the tool slide in order to remove stock; it carries out the infeed and feed movements. The tool makes a contribution to the cutting movement in special cases only (e.g. in thread whirling). In conventional turning, mainly rotationally symmetric (round) parts are machined.
